History of Neighbors Credit Union

More than 80 years ago, on March 16, 1928, Neighbors Credit Union, formerly St. Louis Postal Credit Union, was created in a shoebox and a dream: that every postal worker deserves a helping hand to get more out of life. Today, we've opened our doors to everyone in the communities we serve. We've become one of the largest and strongest credit unions in Missouri, and we owe it all to the principles on which our credit union was built.

Always put people before profits. Always be the one place where our members and their dreams really do come first. Always believe it's only right that people help each other do the right thing. Because that's what being Neighbors is all about.

Here, every member has a voice in how our credit union works, and how each of us is served. One member, one vote, regardless of how much money each of us saves or borrows. It is the fair and democratic way--and the only way we do business at Neighbors Credit Union.

Using money to your advantage can be a lifelong education for yourself and your family. And that's why we're here, helping you plan for an even brighter future every step of the way. Banks just can't take care of their customers the same way, because they have higher priorities: their stockholders.

If you'd prefer helpful advice over a sales pitch; if you like the idea of working with your neighbors, not a global institution headquartered somewhere else; if you believe in the same things we do, we invite you to join us today.

As Neighbors, we'll always work in your very best interest. Here you belong.

We continue to expand our services based on input from people like you who see the value of membership as owners of their financial institution. So if you have any comments or suggestions on ways to improve the member's credit union or website, please email us.

The Credit Union Difference

Other financial institutions focus on money. From the start, credit unions have focused on people, dreams, and results. The credit union difference is evident in four key ways:
  • Governance: Credit unions are locally owned. Each is guided by a volunteer board of directors.
  • Purpose: Credit unions are not-for-profit. Money made by the credit union is returned back to the members.
  • Member benefits: From higher interest rates on savings and lower interest rates on loans, to financial counseling and services, credit unions focus on helping members - not simply making a profit.
  • Values: Credit unions are focused on making a contribution to their local communities.
